Survival after first presentation with endomyocardial fibrosis.

چکیده
Forty-six cases of necropsy endomyocardialfibrosis are analysed and presented with the object of determining their prognosis after first symptoms of the disease. Survival from first symptoms rangedfrom 12 days to 12 years and 2 weeks, the mean survival being 24 months. The commonest mode of termination was by progressive myocardialfailure, very frequently associated with acute respiratory events either pulmonary oedema, bronchopneumonia, or pulmonary infarction. Unexplained sudden deterioration and collapse probably due to a terminal acute dysrhythmia was the second most important immediate cause of death. Patients with sole left-sided endomyocardial fibrosis run a higher risk of succumbing to acute pulmonary oedema. Protection by development of severe right-sided endomyocardial fibrosis, organic tricuspid regurgitation, or pulmonary hypertension was therefore a relative advantage, and if other unexpected complications were excluded, survival time was increased. The role of the continuing myocardial destructive process in determining survival rate is discussed.

Churg-Strauss syndrome with critical endomyocardial fibrosis: 10 year survival after combined surgical and medical management.
A case is presented of the Churg-Strauss syndrome with hypereosinophilia and severe cardiac involvement, namely biventricular endomyocardial fibrosis and gross encroachment of the right ventricular cavity. The clinical picture was similar to Loeffler's syndrome and the idiopathic hypereosinophilic syndrome. Combined aggressive surgical and medical management led to full recovery and survival at...
متن کاملEndomyocardial Fibrosis Secondary to Filariasis - A Vanishing Syndrome
Helminth-induced eosinophilia has been linked to tropical endomyocardial fibrosis. Filaria and schistosomiasis are most frequently found to induce chronic eosinophilia. Rarely, it may lead to endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) [1]. EMF is thought to be vanishing disease in India with occasional reported cases mainly from Kerala in India [2]. Our patient was a native resident of Uttarakhand in India ...
متن کاملRight Ventricular Endomyocardial Fibrosis Presenting With Ventricular Tachycardia And Apical Thrombus - An Interesting Presentation
Endomyocardial fibrosis is a progressive disease of unknown origin affecting children and young adults. It involves inflow portion of right and/or left ventricle and apex. It may be associated with thrombus. Literature regarding right ventricular endomyocardial fibrosis with thrombus is scarce. Here we report a rare case of right ventricular endomyocardial fibrosis presenting as ventricular tac...
متن کاملEarly presentation of endomyocardial fibrosis.
Dear Dr Baker, Having read the interesting report by Cilliers et al about a patient with early presentation of endomyocardial fibrosis at the age of 22 months, we would like to make some comments in comparison with one case we reported some years ago. Certainly, Cilliers’ case is one of the youngest already reported in the literature. They state that the youngest patient reported was an 18-mont...
متن کاملAn unusual manifestation of Cardiac Sarcoidosis.
Non tropical, non hypereosinophilic endo myocardial fibrosis has been reported in literature and is a rare entity. Cardiac Sarcoidosis manifesting as non-tropical, non hypereosinophilic endomyocardial fibrosis is unknown, though it classically affects the left ventricle and is not associated with specific risk factors. We describe an atypical presentation of sarcoidosis as non-tropical non hyp...
